Calgary was on the road in Detroit to battle the Red Wings Thursday night. The Flames entered Friday fifth in the Pacific Division with a 24-18-10 record, eight points behind Vegas for the top spot in the division race. They were five points back of the Oilers for the final guaranteed spot and were tied with the Wild for the second wild-card spot though they had played one more game. Calgary is 18th in the league in goals for as they put up an average of 3.08 goals per contest. The Flames are 15th in the league in goals against by allowing three goals a night this season. Calgary is 25th in the league in power play success as they convert 19% of their chances with the man advantage on the year. The Flames are 6th in the league in penalty killing as they successfully navigate through 82.3% of their shorthanded situations.

Against Detroit, Calgary sputtered to put the puck in the net and it proved critical as they were good enough in their own end to win, yet they fell short. The Flames controlled the opening period of play, owning a 12-5 advantage in shots on goal, but neither team dented the twine, keeping things scoreless after 20 minutes. In the second period, Calgary had a 9-8 shot advantage with both teams tallying a goal to keep things even after two periods of play. Blake Coleman staked the Flames to a 1-0 lead with his 12th goal of the year at 18:07 off assists from Noah Hanifin and Mikael Backlund. They gave up the equalizer in the final seconds of the period. In the third period, the Flames owned a commanding 15-4 advantage in shots on goal but they were outscored 1-0 on the scoreboard to wind up on the short end as time expired. Dan Vladar made 15 saves for the Flames, who held a 36-17 shot advantage, in the loss. Jacob Markstrom is expected to get the call between the pipes for this game.
