Boston Bruins (2-0-0) vs. San Jose Sharks (0-2-1)
The 2023-24 NHL season continues Thursday, October 19, with the Boston Bruins taking on the San Jose Sharks in the interconference showdown at SAP Center at San Jose, and the puck drop is set for 10:30 PM ET.
Boston heads to California searching for its 12th consecutive victory over the Sharks. The Bruins are listed as heavy -255 moneyline favorites, while the Sharks are +225 home underdogs with a total of 6.0 goals.
The Boston Bruins started their 2023-24 campaign on the right foot, winning a couple of games in front of the home fans. After a 3-1 victory against the Chicago Blackhawks, the Bruins outlasted the Nashville Predators 3-2 this past Saturday.
James van Riemsdyk scored a couple of power-play goals to lift his team over the Predators. David Pastrnak netted a penalty shot after scoring two goals against the Blackhawks, while Jeremy Swayman allowed two goals on 36 shots in his season debut.
“Anytime you get your first one, it definitely helps you relax a little bit,” James van Riemsdyk said. “We moved the puck around pretty well and we made good plays just to get the puck to the net. We k ept it simple and tried to get traffic down there and, obviously, we got rewarded.”
“We need more teaching than we did last year just to be able to play fast,” Bruins coach Jim Montgomery said. “I really liked how our 5-on-5 game changed from Game 1 to Game. We played a lot faster in all three zones, so that was encouraging, but we still got a long way to go.
Linus Ullmark is expected to guard the cage Thursday in San Jose. The 30-year-old netminder stopped 20 of 21 shots in that 3-1 win against Chicago. Last season, Ullmark went 40-6-1 with a shiny 1.89 GAA and a .938 save percentage.
