It’s too early to get too excited about anything that happens in the NFL, but it always happens anyway, especially with young quarterbacks. Jumping to conclusions and knee-jerk reactions are annual August exercises. So, with that said, it’s time to get fired up about Trey Lance of the 49ers.
As a rookie, the No. 3 pick of the 2021 draft started two games and won one. He’s now the future in San Francisco, and the Jimmy Garoppolo era is a thing of the past. It appears the 49ers are doing the right thing by rolling with Lance, and not just due to one big play in the first preseason game.
“The 49ers are a team that can win it all, and I think they challenge the Rams to win the NFC West,” Red Rock sportsbook director Chuck Esposito said. “If they were willing to move on from Garoppolo to Lance, they must feel confident with Lance. He’s a quarterback with a big arm and mobility.”
Lance showed something in the 49ers’ 28-21 victory over the Packers on Friday, when he completed 4 of 5 passes for 92 yards. On a 76-yard touchdown strike, he threw a 30-yard bullet to rookie Danny Gray, who caught the ball in stride and raced the rest of the way.
