A pair of mid-major programs that struggled last season hope to start the 2022-23 season on a positive note as the Horizon League takes on the Missouri Valley Conference in the Hoosier State. The Green Bay Phoenix are on the road as they travel to face the Indiana State Sycamores Monday night. Green Bay finished last season a dismal 5-25 overall and went 4-16 in the Horizon League as they failed to reach postseason play. Indiana State wasn’t all that great either, posting an 11-20 mark overall, including a 4-14 showing in the Missouri Valley Conference. In the all-time series between the programs on the hardwood, the Sycamores own a 4-2 advantage and have won the last four meetings. That includes an 81-77 road victory in the most recent matchup on November 9, 2021.

Green Bay had a dismal campaign in 2021-22 for coach Will Ryan, actually regressing from 8-17 in his first season to just 5-25 last year. The Phoenix was a young team last season as they had only one senior and one junior, who logged all of 25 minutes of action, on the roster. There’s not a whole lot of new faces in the mix as they still have just one senior, that coming in the form of transfer Ryan Wade, who is on his third program after spending two years at Holy Cross and one at Central Michigan. They added some transfer players but none of them were overly impactful in their previous stops, so it will be another challenging year for Ryan as they try to stay relevant in the Horizon League this season.

The Phoenix was a struggling offensive attack as they piled up an average of 61.7 points per game this season, putting them 346th in the nation in scoring offense. Green Bay collec ted 30 rebounds a night (350th) while dishing out an average of 10.7 assists (327th) per game last season. The Phoenix was average defensively as they rank 172nd in the nation in scoring defense by allowing 68.9 points a game. With their top three scorers from a season ago no longer with the program, Cade Meyer and his 9.1 points plus 4.3 rebounds, is the team’s leading returning scorer. Nate Jenkins and Randy Tucker are the only other players back from a season ago.  The Phoenix will need to get production from transfers Ryan Wade, Garren Davis (Loyola-Maryland), Davin Zeigler (Bowling Green) along with some of their young players this season if they hope to have success. Green Bay shot 41.9% from the field as a team last season. The Phoenix splashed only 5.2 triples a night, which was 340th in Division I, while shooting 28.2% (354th) from beyond the arc as a team. Green Bay was average at the charity stripe, cashin g in 71.4% of their attempts as a team this year.
