When Did the NFL & AFL Merge?

The NFL and AFL merged on June 8, 1966, but the two leagues did not fully integrate until the 1970 season.

The original agreement said that the two leagues would come together with 24 total teams, which then would be increased to 26 in 1968 and 28 by 1970.

In 1966, the Green Bay Packers (NFL) defeated the Kansas City Chiefs (AFL) in the first AFL-NFL World Championship Game/Super Bowl I, 35-10, while the two leagues were beginning the merge process.

The first Super Bowl under the new NFL with the AFC and NFC conferences took place during the 1970 season, when the Baltimore Colts defeated the Dallas Cowboys, 16-13, in Super Bowl V.
