Tomlin was Pittsburgh's successor to Bill Cowher, who was arguably the most beloved Steelers coach of all time.'
Prior to taking the job as head coach of the Steelers, Tomlin had worked for one year as defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings. He had also worked as an assistant for several college programs, including Memphis, Cincinnati, Arkansas State, and Virginia Military Institute.
