Home to the New York Mets, Citi Field opened March 29, 2009, with a college baseball game between St. John’s and Georgetown. On April 3, 2009, the Mets played their first game at the ballpark, a charity exhibition game against the Boston Red Sox. The first official MLB game was played on April 13, 2009, with the Mets facing the San Diego Padres.
Citi Field has a capacity of over 45,000 people (including standing room). The stadium was built as a replacement for the adjacent Shea Stadium.
Shea Stadium, the former home of the Mets, opened on April 17, 1964 and held its last event on Sept. 28, 2008. Demolition of the ballpark began on Oct. 14, 2008, and was completed on Feb. 18, 2009. The locations of Shea Stadium’s home plate, pitcher’s mound, and bases are marked in Citi Field’s parking lot.
