Western Michigan will try to play a competitive game when it travels to Iowa State on Sunday afternoon. The Broncos have lost five of their last six games, including a 62-56 setback against UIC last Saturday. Iowa State has won eight of its first 10 games this season, beating McNeese State in a 77-40 blowout last Sunday.

Western Michigan’s road-heavy schedule will continue on Sunday afternoon. The Broncos have played six of their eight games against Division I opponents away from home, with one of their home games coming in their loss to UIC last Saturday. They have only recorded one win over a Division I team this season, beating Houston Christian, which ranks No. 349 of 363 teams in KenPom’s ratings. Western Michigan is led by Lamar Norman Jr., who is averaging 18.6 points despite being held to five points against the Flames. Titus Wright is averaging 7.9 points and 5.3 rebounds, while Markeese Hastings (6.9, 8.6) and Tafari Simms (7.9, 5.3) are both key players as well.

They were able to outscore UIC 36-22 in the paint, but it was not enough to win the game as 1-point underdogs. Tray Maddox Jr., who is averaging 10.7 points and 4.2 rebounds, has started the past two games after coming off the bench in his first four games. Western Michigan desperately needs a spark offensively, as it ranks No. 296 in effective field goal percentage (46.6). The Broncos have been particularly bad from beyond the arc, knocking down just 28.2% of their attempts from 3-point range. They are also dealing with severe turnover issues, so their only saving grace has been their high offensive rebounding rate. Western Michigan is facing an Iowa State defense that leads the country in turnover rate and is No. 11 in overall adjusted efficiency.
