Weber State Wildcats (3-7) vs. Cal Poly Mustangs (5-4)

The 2022-23 college hoops season goes on Friday, December 16, when the Weber State Wildcats take on the Cal Poly Mustangs in the non-conference showdown at Robert A. Mott Athletics Center in San Luis Obispo, California, with the tip-off at 10:00 PM ET.

The Wildcats and Mustangs lock horns for the first time since 2013. Cal Poly opens as a 5.5-point home fave, and the totals are listed at 129.0 points.

The Weber State Wildcats (3-7; 1-7 ATS) put an end to their four-game losing streak this past Saturday, defeating the St. Martin’s Saints 82-58 at home. The Wildcats made 50.9% of their field goals (12-for-24 from deep) and 14 of their 17 attempts from the charity stripe while posting an underwhelming 16/17 assist-to-turnover ratio. Junior guard Steven Verplancken had 21 points (5-for-7 from deep), and sophomore forward Dillon Jones double-doubled with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

However, the Wildcats haven’t beaten a Division I team since November 22 and a 77-67 victory over Abilene Christian at the neutral site. Last week, the Wildcats visited California Baptist and suffered a 64-52 defeat as 8.5-point underdogs. They couldn’t cope with the Lancers ’ defense, shooting 36.0% from the field and handing out just eight assists.

Weber State is No. 317 in the NCAA NET Rankings and No. 285 in the KenPom rankings. The Wildcats score 96.9 points per 100 possessions (289th in the nation) and surrender 106.8 in a return (277th). They shoot only 42.3% from the field (285th) and 31.9% from downtown (267th). The Wildcats’ defense has struggled so far this season and ranks 354th in field goal percentage (48.7%) and 359th in 3-point percentage (40.7%).
