The Washington Nationals (65-79, 79-65 RL, 69-69-5 O/U) and the Pittsburgh Pirates (66-78, 72-72 RL, 78-62-4 O/U) resume a four-game series on Wednesday night. The Nationals will have rookie Jackson Rutledge on the mound. The Pirates have yet to name a pitcher. The season series is 2-2 entering Tuesday night.

The Nationals will have Jackson Rutledge make his MLB debut in this one. Rutledge was selected in the first round in the 2019 draft.  The rookie was solid in the minor leagues this year, posting a 3.71 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP accompanied by an 8-4 record in 119 innings. The right-hander has recorded a 4.53 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP in four seasons in the minor leagues. He is the Nationals' #13 prospect.

The Nationals are in the middle of a road trek. They actually have more road wins than home wins this season. The young squad has won two of their last three road series. It's been a rough go in recent games. They dropped two of three home bouts to the Dodgers this past weekend and rebounded with a 6-2 win on Monday. The Nationals are 3-7 in their last ten games.

Joey Meneses is slumping, hitting .138 with a poor .331 OPS in September. The 31-year-old DH is having a productive season, knocking in 78 runs along with a decent .724 OPS. Meneses is hitting a dazzling .412 with two RBIs and a solid .824 OPS against the Pirates this season.

The Nationals have cooled at the plate and are scoring an average of 4.33 runs, ranking them 21st. The pitching is weak, reporting a 4.97 team ERA, pegging them 27th.
