The Philadelphia Phillies are eyeing a four-game sweep in Sunday’s finale and 12th game clash this season with the Washington Nationals. It was more of the same for the Nationals on Saturday night with them getting obliterated on the road at Citizens Bank Park. We’ll see if they can avoid a fifth straight loss in the head-to-head meetings in the finale. Cory Abbott gets the green light to start at pitcher for the Nationals against Philly’s Aaron Nola.

Not only are the Nationals on the verge of being swept by the Phillies, but they’re also on the verge of losing their fifth straight loss in the head-to-head meetings. And they’ve been blown out in back-to-back to games.

It’s hard to win games when your pitching rotation is dead last in ERA and you’re allowing an average of 5.63 runs per game on the road. They’re getting buried so badly on the scoreboard they don’t even have a fighting chance in games. Such is the case when you’re rebuilding a team.

Trusting in the process sure can be painful sometimes.

Cory Abbott will be the next pitcher on the rubber for his second start of the season. The second-year righty pitched a shutout against the New York Mets over five innings on Tuesday. He only allowed two hits in that outing against the No. 2-ranked team in the National League. Not bad, right?

Let’s see if he can build on that momentum against a Phillies team batting with extreme confidence right now. And maybe, just maybe, the Nationals will have a fighting chance.
