The San Francisco 49ers (10-4)  will host the Washington Commanders (7-6-1) on Christmas Eve in an NFC  matchup. These historic franchises last met on Dec. 13, 2020, when Washington won 23-15 as a three-point road underdog.

The 2022 season has been a rollercoaster for the Commanders. After winning the season opener 28-22 over Jacksonville, Washington dropped four straight games. After an ugly 12-7 win over the Bears on Thursday, October 13, Taylor Heincke took over at quarterback for a then-injured Carson Wentz, and Washington proceeded to go 5-1 with Heincke as a starter before running into other New York Giants. The Commanders tied the Giants 20-20 on December 4 and following their bye week, lost 20-12 on Sunday Night Football. Washington is clinging onto the final playoff spot in the NFC, with their tie giving them the edge over Seattle and Detroit.

In eight games this season, Taylor Heincke has completed 61.4% of his passes and is averaging 211.6 passing yards per game with 10 touchdowns and five interceptions. Rookie Brian Robinson Jr leads the rushing attack with 652 yards on the season but is showing improvement each week with opportunity, averaging 96.7 yards per game over the last three contests.

Over the previous three games, Washington is 13th in the NFL averaging 5.6 yards per play. The defense is 11th averaging 5.1 yards per play in the last three games.
