Washington was in action against New York Wednesday night at home trying to stop a stretch that saw them drop four of their previous five games. The Capitals went into Wednesday’s action 34-32-8 and stood sixth in the Metropolitan Division, 27 points behind the Hurricanes for the top spot. They were 22 points behind the Rangers for the final guaranteed playoff spot in the division and six points back of the Penguins for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. Washington is tied for 18th in the league in goals per game with 3.16 goals per contest on the year. The Capitals are 15th in the league in goals against as they allow an average of 3.08 goals per contest. Washington is tied for 12th in the league in power play success as they have converted 21.9% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Capitals are tied for 5th in penalty killing as they successfully navig ate through 82.9% of their shorthanded situations this season.
Against Pittsburgh, Washington staged a rally in the third period to get back into the contest but a bad turnover late led to the game-winning goal that sunk them. The Capitals were outshot 13-9 in the opening period but neither team dented the twine, keeping things scoreless after 20 minutes. In the second period, Washington was outshot 15-14 in the period and was outscored 2-0 to trail by that margin after two periods of play. The third period saw the Capitals outshot 12-11 and they outscored Pittsburgh 3-2, leaving them a goal short as time expired. After giving up a goal in the opening minute of the period to trail 3-0, Washington got in gear. Tom Wilson got Washington on the board with his ninth goal of the season at 5:19 off an assist from Evgeny Kuznetsov. Alex Ovechkin made it a 3-2 game with his 42nd goal of the season, on the power play, at 13:18 off assists from John Carlson and Dylan Strome. Strome knotted the game at 17:16 with his 18th goal of the year with assists going to Conor Sheary and Nicolas Aube-Kubel. The Capitals gave up the eventual winning goal with 1:20 remaining to take the loss. Darcy Kuemper made 36 saves for Washington, who was outshot 40-34, in the loss. Charlie Lindgren is expected to get the start in goal for this contest.
