The Washington Capitals face the San Jose Sharks with both teams looking to improve on rough seasons. The Capitals have a 30-27-6 record and with only three wins in their last 10 games have fallen into sixth place in the Metropolitan Division. The Sharks have an 18-32-12 record and with only two wins in their last 10 games have dropped to second-last in the Pacific Division. Both teams look to improve in their divisions and turn their seasons around following the trade deadline and the upcoming game looks to be a good one.

The Capitals are having a rough season despite their offense stepping up and scoring 3.02 goals per game. Alexander Ovechkin, Dylan Strome, and Evgeny Kuznetsov have scored 57 goals and 90 assists to lead the top two lines but the rest of the offense has also stepped up. Conor Sheary, T.J. Oshie, and Sonny Milano have combined for 37 goals and 45 assists while defensemen Nick Jensen and Trevor van Riemsdyk have added eight goals and 34 assists from the point to help open up the offense.

While the Capitals' defense has been great this year it has struggled recently, allowing only 2.97 goals per game but allowing nine goals in their last two games. Jensen and van Riemsdyk have combined for 6.8 defensive point shares but the rest of the unit has struggled and with Dmitry Orlov and Erik Gustafsson traded, the unit looks to only worsen as the season progresses. The one bright spot has been the play o f goaltender Darcy Kuemper who has a .909 save percentage and a 2.76 goals-against average on 1203 shots with 5.0 goals saved above average.
