The Washington Capitals are on the road as they take on the Philadelphia Flyers Thursday night. Washington comes in off a 4-2 win over Chicago on the road in their previous contest Sunday night in the second game of a back-to-back set. Philadelphia was beaten 3-2 in overtime on the road by Nashville in their previous game Tuesday night. Washington won their second straight as they downed Chicago on the road in the second game of a back-to-back situation Sunday night. The Capitals entered Wednesday 14-8-3 on the season and stood tied for fourth in the Metropolitan Division, eight points behind the Rangers for the top spot. They were two points back of the Flyers for the final guaranteed playoff spot in the division. Washington is 30th in the league in goals per game with 2.48 goals per contest on the year. The Capitals are 9th in the league in goals against as they allow an average of 2.84 goals per contest. Washington is 32nd in the league in power play success as they have converted just 8.2% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Capitals are 19th in penalty killing as they successfully navigate through 79.7% of their shorthanded situations this season.

Against Chicago , Washington shrugged off playing the second game of a back-to-back to earn a road victory in the Windy City. The Capitals were outshot 10-9 in the opening period of play with neither side lighting the lamp, keeping the game scoreless at the first intermission. In the second period, Washington was outshot 12-7 but outscored Chicago 3-1 to lead by that margin after 40 minutes. After giving up the opening goal of the game, Washington tied the score on Anthony Mantha’s seventh goal of the year at 8:11 off an assist from Connor McMichael. Later in the period, Dylan Strome gave the Capitals a 2-1 lead with his 11th goal of the year at 13:50 with assists going to Joel Edmundson and Alex Ovechkin. Nic Dowd extended to a 3-1 margin with his third goal of the season at 15:23 off assists from Beck Malenstyn and Nick Jensen. In the third period, Washington was outshot 12-11 with each team scoring once, locking up their victory in the game. Dowd made it a 4-1 game with his sec ond goal of the night and fourth of the season at 15:58 off assists from Nicolas Aube-Kubel and Malenstyn. The Capitals gave up a goal in the final two minutes but still skated away with the victory. Darcy Kuemper made 32 saves for Washington, who was outshot 34-27, in the victory. He is expected to be between the pipes again for the Capitals here.
