Washington comes in off a 5-1 road win over the Islanders in their previous contest Saturday. New York was beaten 3-2 in overtime on the road by Pittsburgh Sunday in the second game of a back-to-back situation for both teams in their previous game. Washington snapped a two-game slide as they rolled past the Islanders Saturday night in their previous contest. The Capitals improved to 32-28-7 and stood sixth in the Metropolitan Division entering Monday, 23 points behind the Hurricanes and Devils for the top spot. They were 13 points behind the Rangers for the final guaranteed playoff spot in the division and five points back of the Islanders for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. Washington is 19th in the league in goals per game with 3.09 goals per contest on the year. The Capitals are 13th in the league in goals against as they allow an average of 2.94 goals per contest. Washington is 20th in the league in power play success as they have converted 20.5% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Capitals are 6th in penalty killing as they successfully navigate through 82.9% of their shorthanded situations this season.

Against the Islanders, Washington went down early but got their offense in gear after that to roll to the victory on the road. The Capitals owned a 12-4 advantage in shots in the opening period and took a 2-1 lead to the dressing room after 20 minutes of play. After giving up the game’s first goal to trail by a 1-0 count, Washington knotted the game on Dylan Strome’s 16th goal of the season at 6:41 off assists from Rasmus Sandin and Trevor van Riemsdyk. Later in the period, T.J. Oshie made it a 2-1 game with his 17th goal of the year at 19:13 with assists going to Sandin and van Riemsdyk. The second period saw the shots even at eight with neither team denting the twine, keeping Washington ahead 2-1 after two periods of play. In the third period, Washington held a 7-6 edge in shots and outscored New York 3-0 to secure the victory. Anthony Mantha gave the Capitals a 3-1 lead with his 10th goal of the year at 4:15 off assists from Alex Ovechkin and Strome. Nic Dowd extended to a 4-1 Washington lead with his 11th goal of the year, unassisted, at the 12:18 mark. Nicklas Backstrom closed the scoring with his fourth goal of the season at 12:19 off assists from Sandin and Mantha. Darcy Kuemper made 17 saves for the Capitals, who held a 27-18 edge in shots on goal, in the win. He’s expected to get the start in goal again here.
