A pair of Metropolitan Division teams take the ice looking to earn a victory as they collide in the confines of the Buckeye State. The Washington Capitals are on the road as they make the trip to take on the Columbus Blue Jackets Thursday night. Washington was in action against the Islanders Wednesday night at home in the front half of a back-to-back situation. They defeated the Hurricanes 2-1 on the road in a shootout Sunday in their previous contest. Columbus blew out Buffalo 9-4 on the road Tuesday night in their previous contest. Washington was in action Wednesday night as they hosted the Islanders in the front half of their back-to-back set that closes here. The Capitals entered Wednesday 15-9-4 on the season and stood tied for fifth in the Metropolitan Division, 11 points behind the Rangers for the top spot. They were four points back of the Islanders for the final guaranteed playoff spot in the division. Washington is 30th in the league in goals per game with 2.39 goals per contest on the year. The Capitals are 10th in the league in goals against as they allow an average of 2.79 goals per contest. Washington is 32nd in the league in power play success as they have converted just 9.8% of their chances with the man advantage this season. The Capitals are 12th in penalty killing as they successfully navigate through 81.5% of their shorthanded situations this season.

In their previo us game against Carolina Saturday, 65 minutes wasn’t enough so Washington ended up prevailing in a shootout. The opening period saw the shots even at seven with neither team denting the twine, keeping the game scoreless after 20 minutes of play. In the second period, Washington saw the shots even at eight with each team scoring once, keeping the game level at the second intermission. After falling behind 1-0, Martin Fehervary knotted the game with his first goal of the season at 11:33 off assists from Tom Wilson and Dylan Strome. The third period saw the Capitals outshot 13-5 with neither team scoring, keeping the game even at the end of regulation. In overtime, each team fired one shot on net though neither could light the lamp. During the shootout, Evgeny Kuznetsov scored in the opening round while Darcy Kuemper stopped all three Carolina attempts to secure the win for the Capitals. Kuemper made 28 saves for Washington, who was outshot 29-21, in the win. Charlie Lindgren is expected between the pipes here in the second game of the back-to-back.
