The Washington Capitals face the Calgary Flames with both teams looking to improve from slow starts to the season. The Capitals have a 10-11-4 record and are near the bottom of the Metropolitan Division while the Flames have a 10-10-3 record and are in the middle of the Pacific Division. Both teams are looking to make up ground in their divisions and climb into playoff contention and the upcoming game looks to be a great one as a result.

The Capitals are having a rough season with their offense struggling, scoring only 2.76 goals per game with only eight goals in the last three games. Alexander Ovechkin, Dylan Strome, and Evgeny Kuznetsov have scored 21 goals and 38 assists to lead the top two lines but the rest of the offense has struggled. Only four skaters have scored six goals or more while only five skaters have contributed eight assists or more and opposing defenses can easily eliminate the top-heavy offense as a result.

The offense has let the Capitals down but the defense has also struggled, allowing 3.04 goals per game. Nick Jensen and Martin Fehervary have combined for 3.1 defensive point shares and 86 blocked shots but the rest of the unit has struggled, allowing opponents to carry the puck into the offensive zone and create effective shots on the net. The bright spot has been the play of goaltender Darcy Kuemper who has a .915 save percentage and a 2.53 goals-against average on 544 shots.
