The 11th-seeded Virginia Tech Hokies take on the sixth-seeded NC State Wolfpack with a berth in the quarterfinals at stake Wednesday night. Virginia Tech advanced as they knocked off 14th-seeded Notre Dame 67-64 in their first-round matchup Tuesday night, though they failed to cover as a 6.5-point favorite. NC State fell 71-67 on the road in their regular season finale back on February 28 to Duke, though they did cover the line as a 6.5-point underdog. In the all-time series between the teams, the Wolfpack own a 23-11 advantage, including a 73-69 road win in the most recent meeting on January 7.

Virginia Tech had a tougher than expected challenge but managed to win their third straight game by knocking off Notre Dame Tuesday night. The Hokies ran their record to 19-13 overall after posting an 8-12 record in conference play during the regular season. Against Notre Dame, Virginia Tech led 7-0 early and held a 12-point edge with seven minutes to play in the first half before seeing the Fighting Irish slice the margin to one at intermission. The Hokies found themselves down five with 5:35 remaining in regulation before regrouping to close the game on a 14-6 run, capped by the game’s final three points after the contest was even at 64. Virginia Tech shot 48% from the field, including seven of 19 from three-point range, and held Notre Dame to 42.9% shooting in the game. Grant Basile led the Hokies with 20 points in the win.

Maddox has been out since January 23rd against Duke with a personal issue and isn’t expected to return this season.
