Virginia Bill To Allow In-State College Betting Bumped To 2025

A Virginia sports betting bill, Senate Bill 124, that would allow for bettors to wager on in-state colleges and universities was continued to the state's 2025 legislative session Tuesday.'

The Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee voted 14-0 in favor of considering the bill next year, rather than during the current legislative session. At present, Virginia law prohibits sports betting on games involving in-state colleges like the University of Virginia.'

This restriction causes some Virginia bettors to travel across state borders to wager on games involving in-state teams. Other bettors resort to using illegal sports betting apps to place their wagers.'

Sen. Schuyler VanValkenburg proposed the bill with the hope of bringing sports betting activity related to in-state colleges into the regulated market. He previously told Sports Handle the potential revenue bump from increased wagering in the state wasn't his motivation for proposing the bill.'
