It’s a quarterfinal clash of the ESPN Events Invitational as a team from the Big 12 battles with one from the Atlantic 10 on the hardwood in the Sunshine State. The Iowa State Cyclones are on the road as they take on the VCU Rams Thursday afternoon with the winner advancing to the semifinals. Iowa State cruised to a 92-37 home win over Grambling Saturday, covering the line as a 27-point favorite in their previous contest. VCU earned a 60-56 win over Seattle at home Saturday night, though they failed to cover the line as an eight-point favorite in their previous contest. In the all-time series between the teams, each side has one victory to their credit, with the Cyclones earning a 66-59 win in the most recent matchup on November 26, 1994 in Hawaii.

Iowa State cruised past Grambling for their fourth straight win by at least 31 points to kick off the year. The Cyclones now put that 4-0 mark on the line as they take the floor in this contest. Against Grambling, Iowa State gave up the game’s opening bucket before reeling off a massive 32-2 run that put them up 32-4 with 8:26 to play in the first half and cruised from there to the win. The Cyclones led 48-14 at the half and by as many as 58 in the second half en route to the victory. Iowa State shot a blistering 62.7% from the field, including seven of 15 from three-point range, and controlled the glass by a 37-18 margin. Tamin Lipsey led the Cyclones with 17 points, nine assists and three steals in the win.

The Cyclones are an excellent offensive team as they average 91.2 points per game, putting them 15th on the season. Iowa State pulls down 39.8 boards a night (104th ) while dishing out an average of 19 assists per game on the year. The Cyclones are excellent on the defensive end, ranking 1st in the nation in scoring defense as they allow 45.8 points per contest. Milan Momcilovic is one of five players scoring in double figures with a team-high 14.8 points plus four rebounds per contest this season. The Cyclones average 6.5 three-pointers a night while shooting 39.4% from beyond the arc. Iowa State is above average at the free throw line as they shoot 73% as a team on the year.
