Vancouver Canucks (6-2-1) vs. San Jose Sharks (0-8-1)

The 2023-24 NHL season goes on Thursday, November 2, with the Vancouver Canucks facing off against the San Jose Sharks in the Pacific Division showdown at SAP Center at San Jose with the puck drop at 10:30 PM ET.

Vancouver and San Jose open their four-game regular-season series. The Canucks are listed as surefire -205 moneyline favorites with a total of 6.5 goals, while the Sharks are +182 home underdogs. Vancouver aims for its tenth straight victory over San Jose, so let’s take a look.

The Vancouver Canucks have won four of their last five games overall and are sitting at the second spot in the Pacific Division. Last weekend, the Canucks stopped their three-game winning streak with a tough 4-3 overtime loss to the New York Rangers, and they bounced back immediately, beating the Nashville Predators 5-2 on Tuesday night to close down a three-game homestand.

Vancouver scored four unanswered goals against Nashville to overcome a 2-1 first-period deficit. Elias Pettersson notched his first hat-trick of the season, while Quinn Hughes had three assists. Pettersson now has five goals and 11 assists on his season tally, and Hughes has added three goals and eight dishes.

The Canucks’ offense has been outstanding so far this season. Vancouver is scoring 4.00 goals per game (tied-3rd in the league) while going 8-for-35 with the man advantage (6th). The Canucks are yielding 2.33 goals in return (4th) and rank 16th in the NHL in penalty-killing percentage (77.1%).

Thatcher Demko yielded two goals on 29 shots last Tuesday and advanced to 4-2-0 on the young season. He holds a shiny 1.92 GAA and a .935 save percentage, while Casey DeSmith is 2-0-1 with a 3.07 GAA and a .914 save percentage. The Canucks haven’t announced who’ll guard the cage Thursday, but I’m expecting Demko to make his second straight star t.
