The Vancouver Canucks face the Philadelphia Flyers with both teams looking to start the season on the right foot. The Canucks lost their opening night game and will now travel across the country hoping to avoid starting the year with an 0-2 record while the Flyers weren't expected to compete in the Metropolitan Division but made a statement on opening night with a win on their home ice. Both teams are looking to improve from the previous season and the upcoming game should be a good one as a result.

The Canucks lost their opening night game but looked promising in the defeat, notably scoring three goals with a strong offensive performance. While J.T. Miller and Brock Boeser scored a goal and two assists to lead the top line, the rest of the offense also looked great. Elias Pettersson, Andrei Kuzmenko, and Bo Horvat combined for two goals and an assist while defenseman Quinn Hughes added an assist from the point to help open up the offense.

The offense stepped but the defense, which allowed only 2.82 goals per game last season, let the Canucks down, allowing five goals in the first game with all five being in the final 40 minutes of play. Quinn Hughes and Luke Schenn led the top pairing but the rest of the defense struggled, allowing the opponent to effectively start up the offense and generate shots on the net at will. Additionally, goaltender Thatcher Demko, who had a .915 save percentage and a 2.72 goals-against average on 1967 shots last year, hopes to bounce back after allowing four goals on only 24 shots.
