The 19th-ranked Oregon State Beavers will host the tenth-ranked Utah Utes on Friday night at Reser Stadium. Kickoff is at 6:00 p.m. PT.

Utah (4-0 SU and 2-1-1 ATS) beat UCLA 14-7 last week. It has also earned wins over Florida, Baylor, and Weber State.

Oregon State (3-1 SU and 2-2 ATS) lost 38-35 to Washington State last weekend. It defeated San José State, UC Davis, and San Diego State in its first three games.

The Beavers are 3.5-point spread favorites and the game total is 44.5 points.

Utah: DE Connor O'Toole, WR Mycah Pittman, QB Brandon Rose, and QB Cam Rising are all questionable to play.

Oregon State: LB Makiya Tongue is out and WR Tastean Reddicks is questionable.

The Utes' defense shined in their Pac-12 season opener, holding the Bruins to seven points and 243 total yards, with just nine of those yards coming on the ground (32 carries). LB Karene Reid added a pick-six, picking up the slack for the Utah offense, which is still without QB Cam Rising.

“What adjective is better than great? That’s what our defensive effort was,” said Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham. “Tremendous performance by so many defensive players.”

Utah scores 22.3 points per game (100th) and averages 322.5 total yards (113th), including 157.0 passing yards (120th) and 165.5 rushing yards (56th). The Utes' defense gives up 9.5 points (6th) and 263.8 total yards (60th) per game, including 212.8 passing yards (60th) and 51.0 rushing yards (4th).

Rising and freshman Nate Johnson will continue to split reps at quarterback this week, per Whittingham. Rising has missed the first four games of the season since tearing his ACL in the January Rose Bowl. He is practicing without limitations but still hasn't been given the thumbs up to return to competition. Johnson played well early against UCLA, but a combination of conservative play-calling and defensive adjustments limited his production in the second half. He finished 9-for-17 for 117 yards, a touchdown, and a fumble, as offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig ran the ball on 74 percent of Utah's possessions.

The 2022 Utes defense led the Pac-12 in sacks and tackles for loss and was second in total defense. The unit was also stout against the run and dominant on third down. Aside from end Gabe Reid and Mohamoud Diabate, most of the defensive starters return in 2023. The D is led by DT Junior Tafuna, an impressive group of linebackers, and a solid secondary.
