The Spartans are coming off a loss and look to get back to the .500 mark in Mountain West Conference play hosting a Utah State team that also lost their last game.
Utah State had won three in a row before losing to a ranked San Diego State team in their last game. They only have two losses in their last six games, both facing SDSU, and they are in fourth place in the MWC at 8.4 and 19-6, overall, two games out of first place.
San Jose State has lost two of their last three and four of their last seven games. In that span they lost a 1-point game to Utah State and they are 5-7 in conference play and 14-10 overall.
In their last game Utah State was at home losing to San Diego State 63-61 where they outscored the Aztecs by 14 points in the second half but could not complete the comeback. While they played solid D holding the Aztecs to 39.7% shooting, they only shot 38.5% from the field and 26.3% (5-19) from 3-pt land. In the loss Steven Ashworth led the way in the loss with 18 points and Taylor Funk was one rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine boards. The Aggies failed to cover as a 3-point favorite and they had covered the spread in their previous three games.
On the season Utah State ranks 33rd in the nation averaging 79.6 ppg and they are giving up an average of 71 ppg. Ashworth (16 ppg) is the leading scorer for the squad and he has averaged 21 ppg over the last three games. Funk (14.2 ppg 5.6 rpg) has totaled 33 points and 12 rebounds in th e last two games. Dan Akin (12.3 ppg 7.2 rpg) is the third leading scorer and leading rebounder and while he shot 100% from the floor in the last game, he only had seven points and three rebounds while averaging 15 ppg and eight rebounds in the previous four games.
