Tuley's Takes: Saturday Best Bets in USFL Week 10, plus 1 MLB First 5 play

Friday Best Bet Results

Friday was again mostly spent following the second round of the U.S. Open.

As I mentioned yesterday, I don’t have any bets, but I’m in contention in a pool where you get the combined placing of your three-player team. We’re no longer in first place despite having Rickie Fowler (who the other top contenders also have) as Bryson DeChambeau dropped into a tie for 19th. We need him and Dustin Johnson (tied for 6th) to make runs on Xander Schaufelle and Min Woo Lee over the weekend.

As for our MLB Best Bets, we started the day off great with the Cubs (First 5 +100) jumping out to a 3-0 lead on the Orioles in an 11:20 a.m. PT start and holding on to lead 3-2 after 5 innings and went on to easily win 10-3 for those playing our picks on the full-game money line.

Unfortunately, my supposed Best Bet of the day was just as ugly of a loser as the Yankees trailed the Red Sox 13-1 after 5 and went on to lose 15-5.

It continued our trend of trading money in June (after winning 15.6 units in May), though we’re still 9-6-2 for +3.9 units the last 7 days, according to the VSiN Pro Picks page. And, though we’re still below .500 in June at 16-17-6 (which we try to point out to people isn’t all that bad when you consider how many play-money dogs I play and don’t need to hit 50% to make a profit), we’re back in the black at +0.8 units.

Let’s look for more plays on Saturday. I only have one First 5 play that I like, but I’ll lead off with the USFL Over/Under that I’ve been touting all week in these columns.

USFL Saturday Best Bet

Pittsburgh Maulers-New Jersey Generals Under 41: If you follow me on Twitter @ViewFromVegas, you might have seen this play posted on Monday afternoon and then we’ve repeated it in these columns through the week. We locked it in because we felt it would go lower before game day, and it has as it’s mostly 40.5 everywhere. However, I’ll still call it my Best Bet as I didn’t bet it at 41 because I expected a Push – we believe this total should be at least a field goal lower. The Generals had the No. 1 defense before last week’s games and they’re still allowing 20.7 points per game while the Maulers allow 19.1. The offenses average even lower, plus I think it’s relevant that the Generals won the first meeting 20-3, so we can’t see a shootout, especially with a playoff spot on the line.

MLB Saturday Best Bet

Brewers First 5 Innings -110 vs. Pirates: I don’t like any MLB dogs on Saturday as this is actually pick-’em on the 20-cent, First 5 line. The Brewers are a “swagger play” after snapping their 6-game losing streak on Friday vs. the Pirates, who are slumping themselves with 4 straight losses after being swept mid-week by the Cubs and then losing Friday. We also like Wade Miley (3-2, 3.67 ERA) at home vs. Mitch Keller (8-2, 3.41 ERA).
