The Toronto Maple Leafs are on the road as they make the trip to face the Washington Capitals Tuesday evening. Toronto rallied to down Tampa Bay 4-3 in overtime Saturday night in their previous contest. Washington was beaten 3-2 in overtime by Montreal on the road Saturday night in their most recent contest. Toronto snapped a two-game slide as they rallied in the third period against Tampa Bay on the road before winning the game in overtime Saturday night. The Maple Leafs improved to 3-2-0 on the season and stood tied for third in the Atlantic Division, four points behind Boston and Detroit for the top spot. Toronto entered Monday tied for ninth in the league in goals per game as they average 3.60 goals per contest. The Maple Leafs are tied for 26th in goals against as they have allowed 3.60 goals per contest. Toronto is sixth in the league in power play success as they are converting on 29.4% of their chances with the man advantage. The Maple Leafs are 17th in the league in the penalty killing department as they successfully get through 76.5% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against Tampa Bay, Toronto was flat for most of the first period but turned the pressure up lat e in regulation before winning in overtime. The Maple Leafs held a 17-9 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period but trailed 3-1 on the scoreboard after 20 minutes of play. William Nylander opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the season at 4:16 off assists from Matthew Knies and John Tavares. Toronto gave up three unanswered goals to trail by a pair at the first intermission. In the second period, Toronto was outshot 12-10 with neither team scoring, keeping the game 3-1 after 40 minutes of play. The third period saw the Maple Leafs with a 20-12 shot edge and they outscored Tampa Bay 2-0 to knot the game at three at the end of regulation. Knies made it a one-goal game with his first goal of the season at 12:11 off an assist from Max Domi. Later in the period, Knies knotted the game with his second goal of the game and the season at 14:33 with assists going to Domi and David Kampf. In overtime, Toronto kept the pressure up as they outshot Tampa Bay 5-0 while netting the winning goal. Tavares scored his second goal of the season at 4:05 off assists from Nylander and John Klingberg. Ilya Samsonov started in net but stopped just one of four shots before getting pulled at the 13:29 mark of the opening stanza. Joseph Woll earned the win in relief as he stopped all 29 shots he faced as Toronto owned a 52-33 advantage in shots on goal in the game. Woll is expected to get the call between the pipes for this contest.
