Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Tampa Bay Lightning Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 4-29-2023

The NHL playoffs are in full swing and that brings us a first-round matchup from the Eastern Conference coming to you from the Sunshine State. The Toronto Maple Leafs are on the road as they take on the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 6 of their best-of-seven opening round series Saturday night. Tampa Bay drew first blood and stole home-ice advantage by rolling to a 7-3 victory back on April 18 in Game 1 of the series. Toronto responded with a 7-2 home win on April 20 in Game 2 before rallying to win Games 3 and 4, both in overtime, on the road in Tampa to take a 3-1 series lead. Their backs to the wall, Tampa Bay rallied for a 4-2 win to stave off elimination Thursday night. Will the Lightning prevail at home to force Game 7 or can Toronto close things out for their first playoff series win in 19 years?

Toronto had a chance to close out the Lightning at home in Game 5 but were stymied by Andrei Vasilevskiy to wind up on the wrong end of the scoreboard. The Maple Leafs still lead the series 3-2 and look to close things out here to avoid returning home for a Game 7. Toronto stands 1st in the league in goals for in the postseason as they average 4.20 goals per contest. The Maple Leafs are tied for 14th in the playoffs in goals against by allowing four goals a night. Toronto stands tied for 4th in the league in power play success as they convert 31.6% of their chances with the man advantage this postseason. The Maple Leafs are tied for 10th in the league in penalty killing as they successfully navigate 73.7% of their shorthanded situations in the playoffs.

In Game 5, Toronto had their chances but couldn’t come up with the victory at home, sending the s eries back to Tampa for this one. The Maple Leafs were outshot 14-9 in the opening period of play but skated off tied at one at the first intermission. Morgan Rielly gave Toronto the early lead with his third goal of the series at 5:46 off assists from John Tavares and Matthew Knies. The Maple Leafs gave up the equalizer only 26 seconds later. In the second period, Toronto was outshot 11-7 and outscored 1-0 to trail 2-1 after 40 minutes of play. In the third period, the Maple Leafs held a 14-13 edge in shots on goal but were outscored 2-1 to wind up with the loss. After falling behind 3-1, Auston Matthews drew Toronto within a goal with his fourth of the playoffs at 16:26 off assists from Tavares and Mitch Marner. That was as close as the Maple Leafs would get as the Lightning hit the empty net in the closing seconds to seal the contest. Ilya Samsonov made 34 saves for Toronto, who was outshot 38-30, in the loss. He’ll be back between the pipes again here.
