The Toronto Maple Leafs lost to the Carolina Hurricanes at home on December 30, 3-2. The team lost their final three games of the year (0-2-1) and are 1-4-1 over their last six games. This contest is the first of a three-game California trip for Toronto. The Maple Leafs are 8-3-5 on the road.

Toronto found themselves trailing by two a little over halfway into this contest but cut the deficit in half on the first goal of the year by Timothy Liljegren early in the third. Carolina looked like they had sealed the victory when they scored an empty net goal with 55 seconds left, but Nicholas Robertson added his fifth goal of the season with 10 seconds remaining. There simply was not enough time for the Maple Leafs to find the equalizer. William Nylander was kept off the score sheet but has seven points in his last five games.

Martin Jones played very well in the loss, stopping 25 shots. Toronto is not getting great goaltending, as Jones (4-3-0, 2.73, .915) has clearly been playing well, but Illya Samanov (5-2-6, 3.94, .862) has struggled. Toronto is sixth in goals per game (3.53) but 24th in goals allowed per contest (3.44).
