The Toronto Maple Leafs are on the road as they take on the Florida Panthers in Game 3 of their best-of-seven series Sunday night. Florida continued their success from rallying from a 3-1 series deficit to beat the President’s Trophy-winning Bruins in seven games by taking the first two games of the series on the road. The Panthers earned a 4-2 win in Game 1 Tuesday night and rallied for a 3-2 win in Game 2 Thursday night in Toronto. Will the Maple Leafs get back in the series or will the Panthers put a stranglehold on the series with a win here?

Toronto started Game 2 strong but saw their offense stifled the rest of the way as they were knocked off at home to fall behind 2-0 in the series. The Maple Leafs look to remain unbeaten on the road in the postseason as they take the ice here. Toronto stands tied for 7th in the league in goals for in the postseason as they average 3.38 goals per contest. The Maple Leafs are tied for 10th in the playoffs in goals against by allowing 3.50 goals a night. Toronto stands tied for 6th in the league in power play success as they convert 25% of their chances with the man advantage this postseason. The Maple Leafs are 9th in the league in penalty killing as they successfully navigate 78.3% of their shorthanded situations in the playoffs.

In Game 2 of the series, the Maple Leafs played strong hockey early but couldn’t maintain their offensive attack the rest of the way. Toronto held a 15-9 advantage in shots on goal and took a 2-1 lead to the dressing room after 20 minutes of play. Alexander Kerfoot opened the scoring with his second goal of the playoffs at 2:20 off assists from Luke Schenn and Morgan Rielly. Ryan O’Reilly made it a 2-0 game with his third of the postseason, on the power play, at 5:10 off assists from Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews. They gave up a goal later in the period to narrow the margin to a goal. In the second period, Toronto held a 10-9 edge in shots but were outscored 2-0 to trail 3-2 at the second intermission. The final period saw the Maple Leafs with a 12-11 edge in shots with neither team lighting the lamp, leaving them down a goal as time expired. Ilya Samsonov made 26 saves for Toronto, who held a 37-29 edge in shots on goal, in the loss. He’ll be back between the pipes for this one. Toronto lost promising rookie Matthew Knies to a concussion: he likely is done for the series.
