A pair of Atlantic Division foes and geographical rivals with plenty of bad blood take the ice in search of a victory in Western New York. The Toronto Maple Leafs are on the road as they make the short trip to face the Buffalo Sabres Thursday night. Toronto was upended 5-2 at home by the Rangers in their previous contest Tuesday night. Buffalo was blown out by a 9-4 margin by the Blue Jackets at home Tuesday night in their previous game. In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Sabres own a 6-4 advantage and have won the last two meetings. That includes a 6-4 road win in the first meeting this season on November 4.

Toronto saw their nine-game point streak (6-0-3) snapped as they were beaten by the Rangers at home Tuesday night. The Maple Leafs fell to 16-7-6 on the season and stood tied for second in the Atlantic Division, six points behind Boston for the top spot entering Wednesday night. Toronto entered Wednesday 2nd in the league in goals per game as they average 3.59 goals per contest. The Maple Leafs are 20th in goals against as they have allowed 3.24 goals per contest. Toronto is sixth in the league in power play success as they are converting on 25.9% of their chances with the man advantage. The Maple Leafs are 22nd in the league in the penalty killing department as they successfully get through 78.2% of their shorthanded situations on the year.

Against the Rangers, Toronto had their struggles and they caught up to the team, sending them to defeat at home. The Maple Leaf s were outshot 11-5 in the opening period but the teams skated to the dressing room scoreless after the opening 20 minutes of action. In the second period, Toronto held a 17-14 advantage in shots but was outscored 2-1 to trail by that margin after 40 minutes of play. After falling behind 1-0, Auston Matthews netted his league-leading 24th goal of the season at 7:32 off assists from Morgan Rielly and Tyler Bertuzzi. The Maple Leafs gave up the go-ahead goal a little over two minutes later on the power play. In the third period, Toronto saw the shots even at 11 but they were outscored 3-1 to wind up with the loss. Matthews tied the game with his second of the night and 25th of the season at 1:16 off assists from Jake McCabe and William Nylander. That was the high-water point for Toronto, who gave up three unanswered goals to close out the scoring and send the hosts to defeat. Martin Jones made 31 saves for the Maple Leafs, who were outshot 36-33, in the loss. Ily a Samsonov is expected to get the call between the pipes here.
