Toronto dropped their fifth straight game as they were walloped by Boston to close out a four-game sweep by the Red Sox. The Blue Jays entered Friday 18-14 on the year and stood fourth in the AL East, eight games behind the Rays for the top spot in the division. On Thursday, Toronto got two hits each from Bo Bichette (run, RBI), Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (run, two RBI) and Daulton Varsho (RBI), though it wasn’t enough to get a win. Guerrero Jr. launched his seventh homer of the season for the Blue Jays in a losing effort. Kevin Gausman (2-3) was rocked in taking the loss as he allowed eight runs on 10 hits with one walk and four strikeouts over 3.1 innings of work.

Jose Berrios takes the ball for the Blue Jays as he logs his seventh start of the season in this contest. He comes in 2-3 with a 5.19 ERA, a 1.294 WHIP, seven walks and 34 strikeouts over 34 innings of work this season. Berrios didn&#x 2019;t factor in the decision in his last start, which came Monday on the road against the Red Sox. He threw 5.1 innings, allowing five runs on 11 hits with two walks and four strikeouts in a game Toronto dropped in walk-off fashion, 6-5. In his last three starts, Berrios is 1-1 with a 3.26 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP, four walks and 16 strikeouts over 19.1 innings of work. Berrios makes his third career start against the Pirates in this contest. He is 1-0 with a 3.72 ERA, a 1.655 WHIP, five walks and 10 strikeouts over 9.2 innings of work against them. In his 187th career major league appearance and 186th start, Berrios pitches at PNC Park for the first time.
