Texas won for the fifth time in six games as they took care of business in the opening game of this series Thursday night. The Rangers entered Friday 23-14 on the season and held a 3.5-game lead on the Angels for the top spot in the AL West race. On Thursday night, Texas got two hits from Josh Jung (run), who was the lone player with multiple hits in their seven-hit attack. Marcus Semien hit his seventh homer of the season for the Rangers in the victory. Nathan Eovaldi (5-2) earned the win as he threw 8.2 scoreless frames, allowing three hits with one walk and 12 strikeouts, extending his scoreless streak to 28.2 innings in the process. Will Smith fanned Brent Rooker with runners on second and third to end the game, earning his seventh save.

Jon Gray takes the ball for Texas as he makes his eighth start of the season in this contest. He comes in 2-1 with a 3.82 ERA, a 1.248 WHIP, 14 walks and 27 str ikeouts over 37.2 innings of work on the season. Gray earned the win in his last start, which came Monday on the road against the Mariners. He threw seven innings, allowing one run on four hits with no walks and eight strikeouts in a game the Rangers went on to win 2-1. In his last three starts, Gray is 1-0 with a 3.93 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP, three walks and 12 strikeouts over 18.1 innings of work. Gray makes his fifth career start against the A’s in this contest. He comes in 1-1 with a 5.66 ERA, a 1.258 WHIP, 10 walks and 16 strikeouts over 20.2 innings of work against them. Gray didn’t factor in the decision in his lone career start at the RingCentral Coliseum, which came on May 27, 2022.
