Texas Rangers vs. Chicago Cubs Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 4-7-2023

It’s the start of an interleague series on the diamond as a pair of teams open a weekend set on the north side of the Windy City. The Texas Rangers are on the road as they play the opening game of a three-game set with the Chicago Cubs Friday afternoon. Texas salvaged the finale of their three-game home set with the Orioles as they took a 5-2 victory Wednesday afternoon. Chicago was rained out Wednesday in Cincinnati against the Reds so they ended up with a split of a rain-shortened two-game set. The Cubs prevailed 12-5 in their most recent contest Tuesday night. In the most recent series between the teams, the Rangers took two of three games at home March 28-31, 2019.

Texas played their first six games at home and earned the win in the finale against Baltimore Thursday to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Orioles. The Rangers entered Thursday 4-2 on the season and held a share of the top spot in the AL West with the Angels. Against the Orioles Wednesday afternoon, Texas got a pair of hits each from Adolis Garcia (two runs, RBI) and Josh Jung (run, three RBI) to pace a nine-hit attack. Jung hit his second homer of the season, a two-run shot, in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie and send the Rangers on to victory. Jacob deGrom (1-0) earned the win as he threw six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts. Jose LeClerc worked a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out one, for his first save of the year.

Nathan Eovaldi is on the mound for the Rangers as he makes his second start of the season in this contest. He is 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA, a 1.60 WHIP, two walks and six strikeouts on the year. Eovaldi earned the win in his season debut, which came Saturday at home against the Phillies. He threw five innings, allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts in a game the Rangers went on to win 16-3. Eovaldi makes his third career start against the Cubs in this contest. He comes in 0-1 with a 3.95 ERA, a 1.098 WHIP, one walk and 10 strikeouts over 13.2 innings of work against them. Eovaldi didn’t factor in the decision in his lone career start at Wrigley Field, which came with the Marlins on June 6, 2014. He threw 7.2 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits with one walk and eight strikeouts in a game the Marlins went on to drop 5-3 in 13 innings.
