Tennessee only fell three spots in the AP Top 25 poll despite going 1-2 in the Maui Invitational. That's because they lost to Kansas and Purdue, who were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 at the time. The Maui Invitational was loaded with great teams and the Vols opened with a 73-56 win over Syracuse. But the next day, on Nov. 21, they lost at Purdue 71-67 as a 3-point underdog. The Vols shot just 33% from the field against Purdue and shot 32% against Kansas the next day (69-60 loss). Santiago Vescovi led the way with 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting (5-of-10 3pt), but the rest of the team shot a combined 14-of-53.
Vescovi has had his troubles this season, shooting just 39% from the field and 28.6% from long range with an 8.8 points per game average. Fortunately, for Rick Barnes and Tennessee, the Vols added Dalton Knecht, the transfer portal from Northern Colorado. Knecht is averaging 17.5 points and 4.7 reb ounds on 45% shooting (37.9% 3pt). Freshman guard Freddie Dilione, who has a ton of potential has been out with a foot injury since the Wofford game and is listed as questionable for this game.
Overall, Tennessee has the No. 1 defense according to KenPom in terms of Adjusted Defensive Efficiency. They are allowing just 61.5 points per game and 38.1% shooting (26.7% 3pt). On offense, they are averaging 73.7 points and shooting just 40.7% from the field (331% 3pt).
