The Tennessee Volunteers appeared to be well on their way to a critical road win in Alabama on Saturday after building a 20-7 halftime lead and seemingly in control of the Crimson Tide. Instead, the Volunteers' offense was shut out in the second half on their way to a 34-20 loss. Tennessee is now 5-2 overall and 2-2 in SEC play.

“Credit to Alabama. In particular, in the second half, they played extremely well. Second half, we just weren't good enough. From me to our coaches, to our players, gotta be able to play for 60 minutes against a good football team, and on the road. Extremely disappointed with the outcome. I told the guys in the locker room. They compete, man. They do. We don't play smart enough at times, but they compete, and I'd go with these guys anywhere.” Volunteers head coach Josh Heupel.

Tennessee quarterback Joe Milton I II led the Volunteers' offense in the loss to Alabama. Milton went 28-of-41 through the air for 271 yards and two touchdowns. Both touchdowns were in the first half before the Tennessee offense was slowed by Alabama in the second half. Milton also led Tennessee with 59 yards rushing on the day. Wide receiver Squirrel White had a huge day with 10 catches for 111 yards and a touchdown. Overall, the Volunteers had 404 yards of total offense. They had 22 first downs and turned the ball over once with a fumble.

On the defensive end, Tennessee allowed 358 yards of total offense to the Crimson Tide. The Volunteers had five tackles for loss in the game including four sacks. The Volunteers forced two turnovers in the game, one on a fumble recovery and the other on an interception.

The Volunteers come into this battle with Kentucky hoping to bounce back from last week’s second-half collapse against Alabama. The Volunt eers are 27th in the country in total offense this season. They are an impressive 7th in rushing and 76th in passing. They are 59th in red zone offense and 22nd in 3rd down conversions. Defensively, the Volunteers are 13th in the nation in total defense. They are 26th against the run and 22nd against the pass. Tennessee is 65th in red zone defense and 34th in 3rd down defense.

Tennessee is 47th in the country in turnover differential as the season heads towards the final stretch. The Volunteers have struggled with mental mistakes this season. They are just 120th in the nation in penalties per game.
