A pair of division leaders from the American League finish up an early week series on the diamond in the Lone Star State. The Tampa Bay Rays are on the road as they conclude a three-game series with the Texas Rangers Wednesday afternoon. In the opening game of the series Monday night, it was Texas picking up a 3-2 victory to draw first blood in the series. Will the Rays earn a win on getaway day to start to right the ship or will Texas find a way to extend their advantage in the AL West by prevailing here? This article was published prior to the middle game of the series at Globe Life Field Tuesday night.

Tampa Bay lost their second straight and their ninth in the last 12 games as they fell in the opening game of this series Monday night. The Rays entered Tuesday 60-37 on the season and held a narrow one-game lead over the Orioles for the top spot in the AL East. On Monday night, Tampa Bay was held to five hits in the game with Josh Lowe (run, RBI) the only player with two. Lowe hit his 13th homer of the season in the game as the Rays let a 2-0 lead slip away in the contest. Shane McClanahan didn’t factor in the decision as he threw six innings, allowing two runs on three hits with no walks and six strikeouts, before departing. Pete Fairbanks (0-3) took the loss as he allowed one run on one hit with no walks and one strikeout in two-thirds of an inning. His wild pitch plated the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
The Rays have not officially named a starter for this contest but the expectation is that the bulk innings guy here will be Zack Littell, who would make his 15th appearance and third start of the season overall. It would be his 13th appearance and second start with the Rays. He is 0-1 with a 6.05 ERA, a 1.552 WHIP, five walks and 19 strikeouts over 19.1 innings of work. Littell didn’t factor in the decision in his last outing, which came in relief at home against the Braves July 9. He threw two innings, allowing two runs on four hits with no walks and one strikeout in a game the Rays went on to win 10-4. In his last three outings (one start), Littell has no record with a 7.88 ERA, a 1.75 WHIP, three walks and seven strikeouts over eight innings of work. Littell makes his seventh career appearance and second start against the Rangers in this contest. He has no record, a 2.16 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP, three walks and nine strikeouts over 8.1 innings of work against them. Littell worked a scoreless inning, allowing no hits with one walk and one strikeout, as an opener with the Giants on June 9, 2021 in a game San Francisco eventually dropped 4-3 in 11 innings.
