The American League East second place Tampa Bay Rays (89-56, 2nd AL East) play the third and final game of a series on the road Wednesday against the American League Central leading Minnesota Twins (75-69, 1st AL Central). Tampa Bay defeated Minnesota in the opening game of their three game series on Monday 7-4. Tampa Bay has won four straight and six of the last seven. The Rays trail first place Baltimore by three games in the AL East but have a comfortable nine-game lead at the top of the AL wildcard race. Minnesota's loss on Monday was its second straight but the Twins hold a comfortable 7 ½-game lead over Cleveland in the AL Central. Tampa Bay will play without six pitchers as well as position players Wander Franco, Manuel Margot, Isaac Paredes and Jose Siri. Minnesota will play without six pitchers as well as position players Byron Buxton, Joey Gallo, Nick Gordon, Jose Miranda, Jorge Polanco and Michael A Taylor.

Tampa Bay has won six of the last seven and much of that is thanks to excellent production at the plate. Tampa Bay is seventh or better in four major hitting categories. The Rays are  fourth in both runs scored with 773 and slugging percentage at .446, while 5th in on base percentage at .332 and 7th in team batting average with .259. Tampa Bay will play without its leader in both home runs (29) and RBI (89) Isaac Paredes, who is on the injured list. Second in home runs is Jose Siri with 25 but he is also out injured and second in RBI with 78 is Randy Arozarena. Tampa Bay has hit 247 doubles, 22 triples and 208 home runs in 145 games.

 

On the mound, the Rays have also performed very well. Tampa Bay is 1st in baseball in WHIP at 1.17, second in batting average allowed at .230 and third in team ERA at 3.78, while 16th i n Quality Starts with 47. Zach Eflin is leading Tampa Bay in wins with 14 and in strikeouts with 164. Tampa Bay hands the ball to Taj Bradley on Wednesday. This season the right-hander is 5-7 with an ERA of 5.44 and 111 strikeouts.
