St. Louis Cardinals vs. Seattle Mariners Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 4-21-2023

St. Louis Cardinals (8-11) vs. Seattle Mariners (8-11)

The MLB betting action goes on Friday, April 21, 2023, with the St. Louis Cardinals taking on the Seattle Mariners in the interleague showdown at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, and the first pitch is set for 10:10 PM ET.

St. Louis and Seattle open a three-game series. The Mariners are listed as slight -125 home favorites, while the totals sit at 8.0 runs. These two foes meet for the first time since 2019, and the Cardinals have won three of their previous four games against the Mariners.

The St. Louis Cardinals are one of the biggest disappointments of the young season. They just finished a seven-game homestand with a 3-4 record, splitting a four-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates and dropping a three-game set versus the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Cards are scoring 4.79 runs per game (12th in the majors) on a strong .274/.354/.441 triple-slash. However, they are yielding 4.89 runs in return (19th), and the Cards’ pitching staff holds an awful 1.48 WHIP (26th). Their bullpen owns a solid 3.33 ERA and 3.11 FIP, but the Cardinals’ starting rotation has recorded an awful 5.60 ERA, 1.65 W HIP, and .311 opposing batting average so far this season.

Steven Matz will take the mound Friday, and the 31-year-old left-hander is 0-2 with a 6.48 ERA, 1.80 WHIP, and 17/8 K/BB ratio through his first three starts in 2023. Last Saturday, he tossed 5.2 innings in a no-decision against the Pirates, who eventually won 6-3. Matz yielded two earned runs on three hits and a whopping five walks while punching out six.

Last season, Matz struggled with injuries, finishing with a 5-3 record and a pedestrian 5.25 ERA in ten starts and five relief appearances (48 innings pitched). He’s 1-0 with a 4.70 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in two career starts versus Seattle.
