St. Louis Cardinals (36-52) vs. Chicago White Sox (38-52)

The 2023 MLB All-Star Game is just around the corner, and the first half of the season wraps up Sunday, July 9, so we are breaking down the interleague battle from Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, Illinois, to get you the best Cardinals vs. White Sox betting pick.

The Cardinals and White Sox close down a three-game series in Chicago. The Chi Sox outlasted the Cards 8-7 in the opener, while the middle game of the series has been excluded from the analysis. Chicago is a -118 moneyline fave for Sunday’s clash, and the totals sit at 9.0 runs.

The St. Louis Cardinals fell to 36-52 on the season following Friday’s loss at Guaranteed Rate Field. It was their seventh defeat in ten games, and the Cards were sitting bottom of the NL Central, trailing the division leaders Cincinnati by 12.5 games.

During that ten-game stretch, the Cardinals have allowed a whopping 73 runs, and their bullpen has been a complete disaster, posting an 8.56 ERA and 6.17 WHIP across 41 innings of work. At least, the Cards have hit the ball well in the last couple of weeks, slashing .285/.357/.443 with 28 doubles and 14 home runs through 442 at-bats.

Steven Matz is projected to get the starting call Sunday in Chicago, and the 32-year-old left-hander is 0-7 with a pedestrian 5.02 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, and 60/25 K/BB ratio in ten starts and eight relief appearances (66.1 innings pitched) in 2023. Since moving to the bullpen in late May, Matz has thrown 16 innings in eight relief apps while posting a 2.81 ERA, 2.73 FIP, and .584 opposing OPS. He pitched last Wednesday, allowing a couple of earned runs on three hits and a walk across 2.1 frames of work against the Miami Marlins.
