The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (1-5, 1-5 ATS, 4-2 O/U) battle the South Alabama Jaguars (3-3, 2-4 ATS, 4-2 O/U) in a Sun Belt showdown on Tuesday night. The Golden Eagles were dealt a home loss by Old Dominion in their previous bout. The Jaguars recorded a dominating road win against UL Monroe in their most recent action. South Alabama collected a 27-20 road win against Southern Mississippi last season.

The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles are searching for their first win since the season opener. That win was against Alcorn State who do not play in the FBS. They have since lost five consecutive games due primarily to poor defense. Southern Mississippi was competitive in a 44-37 loss to Arkansas State in their conference opener. They were three-point favorites in a 17-13 home loss to Old Dominion last week to dip to 0-3 in Sun Belt play. The Eagles have not covered the spread in five consecutive games.

Billy Wiles is struggling. The sophomore QB has connected on less than 59% of his pass attempts in five straight games. He has reached 250 passing yards on two occasions and has collected 1254 passing yards along with a 7:5 TD to INT ratio on the season.

Franke Gore Jr. has been a bright spot. The junior RB has surpassed 100 rushing yards on two of his last three performances including 132 yards against Arkansas State. Gore Jr. now has 397 rushing yards on an average of 3.9 yards per rush. The offense has two receivers with at least 300 yards. Jakarius Caston made five receptions in the most recent defeat and has recorded 334 receiving yards on the season. The Southern Mississippi offense has scored over 30 points in two of their three conference games.

The Golden Eagles' defense has been exploited. They squandered 44 points to Arkansas State and 50 against Texas State. The defense has gained confidence after holding Old Dominion to only 17 points and 337 total yards last week. The pass defense is a bright spot, ranking 38th, while the rush defense is pegged 119th.

Southern Mississippi is scoring an average of 23.7 points on the season, marking them 96th. The defense is conceding an average of 35.3 points, pegging them 125th.
