The Southern Miss Golden Eagles have now lost six straight games, culminating in a blowout loss to Southern Alabama on Saturday. The Golden Eagles fell to 1-6 on the season and 0-4 in the Sun Belt with a 55-3 loss in what was the team's worst performance of the season to date.
“We’ve done a lot of great things in managing the program and building the program, but our offense has been stagnant for far too long. At the end of the season, I am going to address that issue swiftly and urgently,” Will Hall said, alluding to bringing in a new play-caller in the offseason. “In the meantime, I am going to turn the play-calling and game-planning responsibilities over to Jordy Joseph and Sam Gregg for the rest of the season in hopes of creating a spark to finishing the year on a high note.”
The Southern Miss offense has been stagnant this season and haven't scored a touchdown in either of the last two games. Against Southern Alabama, the Golden Eagles were held to just 149 total yards of offense. Even that number was inflated, given that 65 of those yards came on the final drive with the game well out of reach. In all, the team converted just 12 first downs in the game. Quarterback Holman Edwards completed just five passes in the game for a meager 41 yards while throwing an interception.
Southern Mississippi's defense allowed a whopping 647 yards of total offense to Southern Alabama. They have up 34 first downs in all and nearly 300 yards on the ground in the loss. The Golden Eagles have given up 44 or more points in three of their last four games.
Southern Mississippi will try to end a six-game losing streak on the road against App State and its high-powered offense. Southern Miss comes in with the 113th-ranked offense in the country. The Golden Eagles are 79th running the football and just 115th through the air. They are just 95th in the country converting on 3rd down. The Golden Eagles have been solid in the red zone, ranked 38th in the nation. Defensively, they haven’t been much better. The Golden Eagles are ranked 121st in total defense. They are 123rd against the run and 108th against the pass. Southern Miss has had trouble getting teams off the field defensively, ranking just 92nd in the country on third-down conversions. They are 120th in the red zone as well.
Southern Miss hasn’t been effective in intangibles either this season. The Golden Eagles are 99th in turnover differential thus far. They are also just 84th in the country in penalties per game.
