The South Carolina State Bulldogs and South Carolina Gamecocks face off on Tuesday in a college basketball showdown at Colonial Life Arena.
South Carolina State made a coaching change this offseason bringing in Erik Martin to lead the team. South Carolina State has a ton of depth in the backcourt, and that needs to be a strength here. The big problem though is even though they have a ton of depth, there are questions if there are a couple of star players that can step up. Last season Rahsaan Edwards averaged 8.4 points while shooting 34.8 percent from the field and 32.8 percent from behind the three-point line. This season they need Edwards to take a bigger step forward. Atiba Taylor played last season in JUCO but he is back at the D1 level.
On the other side of this matchup is South Carolina and they made a coaching change this offseason bringing in Lamont Paris to lead the team. The top six scorers from last season are gone, and this team looks a whole lot different. Benjamin Bosmans-Verdonk has transferred in from Illinois and although his offense needs to be improved, he is an elite defender. Freshman Zachary Davis is young, but he is going to have a huge role in this game. Hayden Brown transferred in from Citadel and last season he averaged almost 19 points per game. This should be an easy victory for South Carolina, but this needs to be used as a time to get the players on the same page.
