Shohei Ohtani keeps producing numbers that simply shouldn't be possible. He leads MLB in OPS and home runs, and then steps onto the rubber to rank among the top 15 in ERA and WHIP, and first in opponents' batting average.

And yet, his most impressive feat still might be making the Angels somewhat watchable.

The Angels are clinging to desperate playoff hopes after slogging through a seven-game losing streak. However, they snapped that slide during the series opener against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday with a 7-5 victory, and Ohtani helped the cause while driving in a run with his first-inning single.

Here are our best Shohei Ohtani player prop picks for the matchup between the Los Angeles Angels and San Francisco Giants (odds via our best MLB betting sites; pick confidence is based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

Shohei Ohtani player props

Let's get a little aggressive here with an alternative line that goes one strikeout higher than the standard offering from most of our best sports betting sites.

The struggle to get decent contact off of Ohtani feels eternal, as he ranks first in h its allowed per nine innings in 2023 (5.9), and fourth in strikeouts per nine (11.6). He's reached the nine-plus punchout mark in eight of his 21 outings, and Ohtani is well-positioned to add another to that total while facing a highly strikeout-prone Giants lineup.

The Giants rank third in strikeouts leaguewide, and their team average consequently sits at a mediocre .240 (20th). There are four Giants batters who have notched 80-plus strikeouts, with third baseman J.D. Davis leading the way at 119. The same crew of whiffing wanderers struck out eight times on Tuesday night, and infielder Thairo Estrada contributed three (84 on the season).

That's a matchup to salivate over for a pitcher who frequently flirts with double-digit strikeouts, and his strikeout rate ranks in the 94th percentile, according to Baseball Savant. Ohtani's whiff rate also isn't far behind in the 83rd percentile.

Ohtani's outlandish season as the clear AL MVP front-runner has been rolling along steadily at the plate, too. He's recorded a hit in 12 of his last 13 games, with four home runs, six multi-hit outings, and seven extra-base knocks during that span.

He's fresh off a 1.152 OPS in July, and that rate has remained sky-high throughout the first week-plus of August while resting at .958. He continues to casually make consistent quality contact and has also posted a .345 batting average this month.

All of that offensive muscle and Ohtani's 55.6 hard-hit percentage (which ranks among MLB's top 3%) will face a Giants team using an opener and relying on its fifth-ranked bullpen. However, at least one of Ohtani's at-bats will come against Ryan Walker, who has allowed five home runs over only 39 1/3 innings in 2023.< /p>

That's reflective of a bullpen that's been homer-prone, despite its overall effectiveness. Ohtani will spend the entire night facing a unit that's given up 47 long balls (20th).

There will be plenty of opportunities for him to unleash his immense power and accumulate bases, just as he has been throughout 2023 while leading the lead in slugging by a wide margin. He sits at .669, and the Atlanta Braves' Matt Olson is a distant second at .602.
