Seattle Seahawks vs. Kansas City Chiefs Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 12-24-2022

A pair of old AFC West rivals take the field in an interconference matchup on the gridiron in the Midwest. The Seattle Seahawks are on the road as they make the trip to face the Kansas City Chiefs Saturday afternoon. Seattle comes in off a 21-13 home loss to San Francisco in their previous contest last Thursday, failing to cover the line as a three-point underdog. Kansas City struggled before earning a 30-24 overtime win over the lowly Texans on the road Sunday, failing to cover the line as a hefty 14.5-point favorite in that contest. In the all-time regular season series between the teams, the Chiefs own a 33-19 advantage though the Seahawks picked up a 38-31 home win in the most recent matchup in the most recent meeting on December 23, 2018.

Seattle suffered their second straight loss and their fourth in the last five games as they were knocked off by San Francisco in their previous contest last Thursday at home. The Seahawks dropped to 7-7 on the season and stand second in the NFC West though the 49ers have clinched the division crown. Against San Francisco, Seattle never led in the game as they were down 7-0 after the opening quarter, 14-3 at the half and 21-6 after three quarters. The Seahawks got within 21-13 with 3:35 to play in the contest but couldn’t get a stop on the ensuing drive, allowing San Francisco to run out the clock. Seattle was outgained 381-277 in total offense, lost the time of possession by a 33:01 to 26:59 margin and committed the game’s lone turnover. Those numbers overshadowed the slim 16-15 edge in first downs that the Seahawks had.

This season, the Seahawks are 9th in the league in pas sing offense as they average 241.5 yards per game through the air and 22nd in rushing offense with 108.1 yards per contest on the ground. Seattle is 7th in the league in scoring offense with an average of 25.4 points per game and a dismal 29th in scoring defense by allowing 25.4 points per contest. Geno Smith has completed 337 of 472 passes for 3,671 yards with 26 touchdowns against eight interceptions. He has been sacked 37 times while ranking third on the team with 281 rushing yards and a score. Rashaad Penny is second on the team with 57 carries for 346 yards and two scores though he was lost for the season after ankle surgery and a fractured fibula suffered against the Saints October 9. That means rookie Kenneth Walker III (150 carries, 696 yards, nine TD) takes over lead back duties while DeeJay Dallas (24 carries, 104 yards) and Travis Homer (19 carries, 74 yards) are next in line on the depth chart. In the passing game, Tyler Lockett is second on the team with 78 catches for 964 yards plus eight scores on the year. DK Metcalf (79 receptions, 924 yards, six TD) along with tight ends Noah Fant (42 grabs, 414 yards, three TD), Will Dissly (33 receptions, 330 yards, three TD) and Marquise Goodwin (27 catches, 387 yards, four TD) are all over the 300-yard mark for receiving yards. Jason Myers has hit 37 of 38 extra point attempts and 26 of 27 field goal attempts with a long of 56 this season.

The Seahawks’ first injury report of the week was rather lengthy. Running backs Dallas (ankle) and Walker (ankle) along with Lockett (hand), Fant (knee), defensive tackle Al Woods (Achilles), linebacker Darrell Taylor (illness) and safety Ryan Neal (knee) all did not practice. Lockett had surgery on his hand and is likely to miss this game but watch for updates as the week progresses.
