Seattle Mariners vs. Los Angeles Angels Prediction, Preview, and Odds – 9-16-2022

Seattle Mariners (80-62) vs. Los Angeles Angels (61-82)

The Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels start a four-game series at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, on Friday night with the first pitch at 9:38 PM ET. It’s Game 16 of their regular-season set, and the Mariners lead the series 8-7.

Seattle aims for its fifth straight win over the Angels. The Mariners are listed as -151 moneyline favorites, while the Halos are +139 home underdogs with a total of 8.0 runs.

The Seattle Mariners beat the San Diego Padres 6-1 this past Wednesday to split a two-game interleague set. The M’s finished an eight-game homestand with a 4-4 record and will search for their seventh road victory in a row when they face the Angels on Friday. Seattle is 8-4 in September, carrying a shiny 2.05 ERA and 1.02 WHIP across 110 innings along with an uninspiring .214/.305/.425 slash line across 398 at-bats.

Still, the Mariners have slugged 22 home runs in that 12-game stretch. Julio Rodriguez is hitting a terrific .404/.481/.766 with five no-doubters in his last 47 at-bats, while Eugenio Suarez has homered six times over his last 46 at-bats. Ty France has struggled with a wrist injury of late and is 10-for-47 with a couple of dingers in September.

Seattle held the second wild card in the American League on Thursday, one game ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays and four ahead of the Baltimore Orioles (Thursday’s games have been excluded from the analysis). Robbie Ray will get the starting call Friday, and the reigning AL Cy Young Award champ is 12-9 with a 3.56 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 189/53 K/BB ratio in 28 starts (166.2 innings pitched) this season.

Ray met the Angels three times in 2022, posting a 2-0 record with a sparkling 1.80 ERA. The 30-year-old southpaw has yielded four earned runs on 14 hits and five walks across 20 frames of work while punching out 30. Their last duel came in August, and Ray fanned ten in an 8-2 victory at Angel Stadium.
