Detroit took two of three on the road against Cleveland earlier in the week, prevailing 5-0 in the finale of the series Wednesday afternoon. Seattle dropped two of three at home to the Rangers in their previous series so they head into this set looking to gain some positive momentum. The Mariners entered Friday 18-19 on the season and stood fourth in the AL West, five games behind the Rangers for the top spot in the division. On Wednesday night, Seattle finished with seven hits in the game as Jarred Kelenic (RBI) was the lone player with two. The Mariners finished with just three at-bats with runners in scoring position in the contest. Luis Castillo (2-1) took the loss on the mound as he allowed three runs on eight hits with no walks and nine strikeouts over five innings of work.
Bryce Miller takes the hill for the Mariners as he makes his third career major league start in this contest. He comes in 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA, a 0.417 WHIP, one walk and 15 strikeouts over 12 innings of work this season. In his last start, Miller earned his firs t big league win as he beat the Astros at home Sunday. He threw six innings, allowing no runs on two hits with one walk and five strikeouts in a 3-1 Seattle triumph. In his third career major league start, Miller pitches against the Tigers for the first time. This also marks his first career start at Comerica Park. Prior to his recall, Miller was 0-2 with a 6.41 ERA, a 1.322 WHIP, three walks and 18 strikeouts over 19.2 innings in four starts with Double-A Arkansas of the Texas League.
