Seattle struggled at the plate on Monday night and their inability to come up with clutch hits proved to be their undoing in an extra-inning defeat. The Mariners entered Tuesday 4-7 on the season after the second straight loss and were fourth in the AL West, two games behind the Rangers for the top spot. Against the Cubs, the Mariners finished with just six hits and Kolten Wong, who entered the game in the seventh inning, was the lone player with two hits. Jarred Kelenic hit a game-tying homer, his first, in the ninth inning and the Mariners had the bases loaded with one out in the 10th only to see Ty France strike out and Eugenio Suarez bounce into an inning-ending fielder’s choice. Luis Castillo didn’t factor in the decision as he threw six innings, allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Matt Brash (0-1) took the loss as he allowed one run (none earned) on one hit with no walks and one s trikeout in one-third of an inning.

Logan Gilbert is slated to take the mound for the Mariners here in the series finale as he logs his third start of the season. He is 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA, a 1.30 WHIP, three walks and 13 strikeouts over 10 innings of work. Gilbert didn’t factor in the decision in his last start, which came on the road against the Guardians Friday. He threw four innings, allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and six strikeouts in a game the Mariners eventually won 5-3. In his 59th career major league start, he pitches against the Cubs for the first time here. As a result, this marks Gilbert’s first career start at Wrigley Field.
