The San Jose Sharks face the Tampa Bay Lightning with both teams on opposite ends of the standings this season. The Sharks have a 15-25-11 record and with only three wins in the last 10 games are near the bottom of the Pacific Division. The Lightning have a 32-15-1 record and are near the top of the Atlantic Division. Both teams are looking to improve in the second half of the season and the upcoming game should be a good one as a result.

The Sharks are having a rough season despite their offense stepping up and scoring 3.06 goals per game. Timo Meier, Tomas Hertl, and Logan Couture have scored 51 goals and 72 assists to lead the top two lines but the rest of the offense has also stepped up. Alexander Barbanov, Kevin Labanc, and Nico Sturm have combined for 28 goals and 45 assists while defenseman Erik Karlsson has added 16 goals and 50 assists from the point to put the offense over the top.

The offense has been great but the defense has been awful, allowing 3.75 goals per game including 21 goals in the last five games. Erik Karlsson and Matt Benning have combined for 3.8 defensive point shares but the rest of the unit has struggled, allowing opponents to find open shots on the net at will. Additionally, goaltender James Reimer has struggled with a .895 save percentage and a 3.31 goals-against average on 883 shots with -9.6 goal s saved above average.
