The San Jose Sharks face the Carolina Hurricanes with both teams heading in opposite directions this season. The Sharks have a 14-25-10 record and with only two wins in the last 10 games have fallen to the bottom of the Pacific Division. The Hurricanes have a 30-9-8 record and with three wins in a row are in first place in the Metropolitan Division. The Sharks look to turn around their season while the Hurricanes look to remain near the top of the Eastern Conference and the upcoming game should be a good one as a result.

The Sharks are having a rough season with their offense struggling, scoring only 2.98 goals per game. Timo Meier and Tomas Hertl have combined for 42 goals and 49 assists while Erik Karlsson has added 15 goals and 49 assists from the point but the rest of the offense has struggled. Only six skaters have nine goals or more and opponents can limit the top-heavy offense as a result.

The offense has struggled but the defense has let the Sharks down, allowing 3.71 goals per game including 12 goals in the last three games. Erik Karlsson and Jaycob Megna have combined for 4.7 defensive point shares but the rest of the unit has struggled, allowing opponents to find open shots on the net at will. In addition, goaltender James Reimer has struggled with a .896 save percentage and a 3.25 goals-against average on 847 shots.
